External Description: At Ford Motor Company, we believe freedom of movement drives human progress. We also believe in providing you with the freedom to define and realize your dreams. With our incredible plans for the future of mobility, we have a wide variety of opportunities for you to accelerate your career potential as you help us define tomorrow's transportation.

The Experience Design (XD) Team is responsible for the digital and physical design of new businesses, new products, and new services in emerging areas such as autonomous vehicles, mobility services, and commercial vehicle services. We are looking for creative individuals to join us and help further the vision and mission of D-Ford's XD team. We are committed to envisioning and crafting simple, thoughtful, enjoyable, and compelling products and services for customers!

We're in the midst of the biggest change the automotive industry has ever seen. Just as cars changed the world over the last century, new technologies such as self-driving cars, electric powertrains, and connected vehicles will radically reshape how we live, work, and play in the next hundred years. You'll be at the heart of creating that future. You'll craft every touchpoint our customers encounter, designing people and society's needs into the heart of our next generation of out-of-vehicle products, services and experiences. You'll also be designing at scale. Every day, Ford's vehicles, and services support millions of people around the world. So, we're not just inventing the future, we're operationalizing it, to help all those people move through their lives better.

We create differentiating experiences that delight users through empathy, creativity, and design.

What you'll be able to do:
The XD Spatial Design Director will lead our tangible design team within the studio covering our entire end-to-end portfolio. You will guide your team of UX, industrial & architectural designers, and craftsmen as they partner with strategy and technology to ideate, visualize, and prototype our future customer experience.

You'll lead designers responsible for physical spaces, products, and services that deliver the best possible user experience, creating differentiation for Ford. Your team will work cross-functionally to imagine and bring to life elegant solutions to complex problems and design exceptional new experiences across physical spaces and touch-points.

You'll bring big ideas to life with extraordinary design while providing inspirational leadership and thought partnership for the team. You have numerous outlets for which to express your designs and concepts - hand sketches, models, digital comps, rapid prototyping, storyboarding, and more. You'll own the outcomes and deliver within project constraints. You are a storyteller, a brand builder and are creative to the core.

You have the ability to advance our practice of design, through a lens of equity, systems change, and co-design methodologies. You're excited to demonstrate, inspire, and model creativity, inclusivity, and co-creation in order to build impactful solutions.

Your experience rendering concepts, thinking with your hands, and sweating the details are all in service of making ideas tangible and inspiring teams around solutions. You'll thrive at leading teams with diverse backgrounds, skills and opinions, and understand the unique contributions different individuals make.

The minimum requirements we seek:

  • Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and equivalent experience
  • 8+ years of experience design in physical spaces, or industrial design
  • 4+ years of experience leading a design team
Our preferred requirements:
  • Ability to create, demonstrate, evangelize, and oversee a variety of visual design deliverables including creative briefs, story boards, mood boards, three-dimensional (3D) models, product renderings/visualizations, layouts, and prototypes of varying levels of fidelity.
  • Portfolio of projects that demonstrate your design skills
  • Mastery of Adobe Suite and prototyping tools (Sketch, Figma, etc.)
  • Top-notch design craftsmanship, and ability to articulate the whys and how's of user-centered design methods.
  • Proficient in presentation software (Keynote)
  • Experience operating in cross-functional organizations
  • Ability to jump-start projects without clear direction
  • Expert collaborator and thrive off working with other creatives, partners and disciplines
  • Clear, open, honest communicator
  • An openness for rigorous critique - giving and receiving feedback with optimism, clarity, and calm
  • An interest in emerging tech, the latest creative tools, and burgeoning design trends
  • Ability to work collaboratively, both in person and digitally
What you'll receive in return:
As part of the Ford family, you'll enjoy excellent compensation and a comprehensive benefits package that includes generous PTO, retirement, savings and stock investment plans, incentive compensation and much more. You'll also experience exciting opportunities for professional and personal growth and recognition.

If you have what it takes to help us redefine the future of mobility, we'd love to have you join us.
