The Electrified System Engineering Power Inverter Design Engineer will be responsible for the specification, design, development, and validation of residential / commercial infrastructure installed inverters that will function with Ford's Bi-directional Power Transfer (BPT) and Home Energy Management System (HEMS). BPT and HEMS allow intelligent management of energy use, optimization of EV car charging, provide backup power, and reduce peak energy demands. This position entails working collaboratively with Ford internal and external teams including Software/Controls, D&R, Validation, and Power Electronics suppliers to design / develop an inverter that meets corporate requirements, specifications, and customer needs. This would include electrical circuit design, selecting the appropriate power semiconductor technology, leading device packaging and thermal management, and designing EMC filters. The selected candidate will be part of a team that will drive future product development and be developing industry first features and components in the growing field of vehicle electrification & Home Energy Management Systems!
Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the specification, design, development, and validation of residential / commercial infrastructure installed inverters
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert of infrastructure installed power inverters and provide technical mentorship to D&R, test, and systems engineers on the team
  • Develop and ensure robust interface with EVSE, auto disconnect switch and home electrical infrastructure
  • Participate in design reviews and worst-case circuit analysis
  • Develop and work with supplier and Ford approved test lab to implement EMC test plan
  • Develop a solution that meets regional standards and code compliance including UL, CSA, and CE standards from IEEE, NFPA, and others.
  • Ensure design meets functional safety standards
  • Provide day to day support to resolve user concerns, investigate and solve system faults and errors, resolve downtime issues and support ongoing system maintenance activities such as firmware updates and security patches. Log, escalate and close out issues identified.
  • Stay connected with focus groups and forums to stay at the forefront of technology advancements in order to keep the team abreast of the latest technological solutions
  • Lead quality foundation documents (DFMEA, DVPR, Boundary Diagram, etc.)
The minimum requirements we seek:
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering or Controls Engineering, or other related degree or a combination of education and equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of working experience in inverter / power electronics design and development. Devices such as DC/AC Inverters, DCDC Converters, HV Battery Chargers. (coursework and internship experience allowed).
Our preferred requirements:
  • Master of Science or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or Controls Engineering, other related degree
  • Excellent debugging skills, the ability to articulate defects with detail, and excellent verbal/written communication skills while working with local/remote teams
  • Knowledge in the application of various high power switching technologies / semiconductor materials (Si, SiC and GaN)
  • Experience with development tools and methods for the design of inverter technologies preferred
  • Excellent knowledge of the thermal challenges of high-power inverter design
  • Awareness of applicable building, electrical, interconnection codes, electrical grid / energy distribution, industry best practices, new products, and applications a plus
  • Strong communicator, able to effectively present to both technical and executive audiences
  • Team player comfortable working in a diverse group in a dynamic, fast paced environment
  • Self-starting with solid follow-through and multitasking abilities; able to work remotely.
  • Strong communication skills are preferred
