External Description: A Research engineer position focused on the design and manufacturing of future power electronics convertersin the Electric Machines and Power Electronics Research team. Responsible for execution of design, analysis, manufacturing feasibility, and testing of automotive inverters, bidirectional HV battery charger, DC-DC converters and other next generation on-vehicle power electronic systems. Provides technical input to other engineers, or engineering support personnel.

  • Develop next-generation electric power conversion systems for electrified vehicles
  • Lead research on power converters (pertaining to both silicon and wide bandgap devices), and identify research trends, challenges, opportunities and business case for automotive markets
  • Evaluate competitor, supplier and national laboratories research on the above fields
  • Support power electronics integration in other vehicle subsystems
  • Effectively communicate results by writing papers and technical reports and making presentations
Basic Qualifications
  • PhD in Electrical Engineering from an internationally accredited University
  • 4+ years of experience in power electronics including PhD research
Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong knowledge in the following power electronics areas:
    • Hands on experience with modeling, simulation, design, implementation, testing, and debugging power conversion systems
    • Experience with advanced silicon IGBT technologies, wide bandgap devices (SiC and GaN), and their applications
    • Experience with semiconductor devices modeling and experimental characterization
    • Familiar with analog and digital circuit design, microprocessor based control circuit
    • Familiar with gate drive, passive components, power module packaging, and interface specifications (electric, mechanical, thermal)
    • Knowledge in EMI modeling and analysis for power electronics components and converters
    • Proficiency in circuit and multiphysics FEA simulation software (Matlab/Simulink, Saber, Spice, Q3D, ANSYS) to assist the design of power converters
    • Proficiency in testing equipment (oscilloscope, curve tracer, impedance analyzer, network analyzer, spectrum analyzer)
  • Strong academic training and/or working experience in electric power conversion:
    • Power electronics system design
    • Wide bandgap semiconductors
  • Knowledge in the following areas:
    • Electric machine control theory
    • Thermal management
    • Mechanical structure design
    • Additive manufacturing for power electronics components
  • Understanding of automotive application
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to manage multiple tasks
